The Origin and Meaning of the Miraculous Medal
The Miraculous Medal, also known as the Medal of Immaculate Conception, originated with Saint Catherine Labouré after she experienced a vision of the blessed Virgin Mary. The Miraculous Medal is most often worn by Catholic Christian’s as a reminder of constant devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ.
Some people believe that wearing the Miraculous Medal with faith and devotion will bring them special graces and miracles at the hour of their death through the intercession of Mother Mary. However, it is important to mention that the Miraculous Medal is not considered to be magical or a good luck charm in any way, as this is contrary to Christian beliefs. The medal is not to be used as a idol to worship. It is a beautiful reminder of our devotion to Jesus Christ, and a nice way to express our outward love for Christ.
The Story Behind The Miraculous Medal
It is said that Mother Mary came to Saint Catherine Labouré on the evening of July 18, 1930. The blessed virgin called the nun to the sister’s chapel in a church in Rue Du Bac, Paris. Saint Catherine said that the Virgin Mary spoke to her and said,”God wishes to charge you with a mission. You will be contradicted, but do not fear; you will have the grace to do what is necessary. Tell your spiritual director all that passes within you. Times are evil in France and in the world.”
Saint Catherine reported that the blessed Mother continued to return to her during evening meditations for many months. On November 30, 2012, Mother Mary appeared in what looked to be an oval frame with many brilliant colors emanating from the frame. As the frame rotated, Saint Catherine saw that there were twelve stars around the oval. Some of the rings surrounding her did not give off light. When Saint Catherine asked why some of the rings gave off light and other did not, she was told that the dim rings were the graces that people forget to ask for.
The words “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee,” also appeared around the frame. St. Catherine also noticed an M surmounted by a cross, with the Sacred Heart of Jesus crowned by thorns, and a sword piercing the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Mother Mary then asked Saint Catherine to take this vision to her priest to have a medal designed after what she saw and experienced and to tell the priest, “All who wear them will receive great graces.” She did as the Blessed Virgin requested of her, and after two years of the priest documenting all of Catherine’s daily activities and moves, he took her story and request to the Archbishop and the medallions were approved. The design was sent to a local goldsmith, and the Miraculous Medal was born.
